Bangladesh suffered a major setback in the initial day of the Asia Cup 2023 with prominent wicket keeper-batsman Litton Das being sidelined for the entire tournament due to a viral fever. Litton’s absence was a result of his inability to recuperate, leading to his non-participation in Bangladesh’s opening game in Pallekele, Sri Lanka.
“The National Selection Panel of BCB has named 30-year-old fellow right-hander Anamul Haque Bijoy as Litton’s replacement,” the Bangladesh Cricket Board said in an official statement.
Anamul Haque, with 44 One Day Internationals (ODIs) under his belt, has amassed 1254 runs, including three centuries. His most recent ODI for Bangladesh took place against India in December of the previous year. Scheduled to join the Bangladesh team in Sri Lanka, Anamul Haque is expected to arrive later on Wednesday.
The Chairman of the National Selection Panel, Minhajul Abedin, commented on replacing Das with a like-to-like replacement: “He (Anamul) has been among the runs in domestic cricket and we have continued to monitor him in the Bangladesh Tigers programme. He was always in our consideration.”
Bangladesh is set to commence their Asia Cup journey against co-hosts Sri Lanka on Thursday at Pallekele, Kandy. The squad includes Shakib Al Hasan (Captain), Najmul Hossain Shanto, Tawhid Hridoy, Mushfiqur Rahim, Afif Hossain Dhrubo, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam, Nasum Ahmed, Shak Mahedi Hasan, Naim Sheikh, Shamim Hossain, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, and Anamul Haque Bijoy.
