On Friday, Biden administration announced, that it will allow temporary legal status for migrants from Cuba, Venezuela, Haiti, and Nicaragua to expire.
Thus, leaving hundreds of thousands of people facing potential deportation unless they find alternative ways to remain in the U.S. legally.
This decision affects a program initiated nearly two years ago that granted migrants from these four nations the opportunity to apply for a two-year stay in the U.S., provided they had a financial sponsor and passed background checks.
But, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that migrants would no longer be able to extend their stay under this initiative.
Talking about the program, DHS spokesperson Naree Ketudat said “This two-year period was intended to enable individuals to seek humanitarian relief or other immigration benefits for which they may be eligible, and to work and contribute to the United States.”
However despite the non-extension of program, new applications for the program will still be accepted, and similar programs for Afghan and Ukrainian migrants will allow extensions.
Meanwhile, the Biden administration has permitted Afghan and Ukrainian migrants who entered the U.S. under temporary programs to apply for extensions, allowing them to remain in the country longer with renewed temporary status.
