In a bizarre incident, two British Army soldiers were discovered engaging in sexual activity in the cockpit of an Apache attack helicopter during routine maintenance. According to a publication, the incident involved an AH-64 gunship worth £8.5 million (approximately ₹75 crore).
Ground crew members, who had just completed nighttime servicing of the aircraft, were alerted by unusual noises and the swaying of the helicopter’s rotors.
When maintenance personnel approached to fit rain covers over the helicopter, they were shocked to find a man and a woman in the rear cockpit, partially undressed.
Both soldiers, reportedly intoxicated, were ordered to leave the cockpit and get dressed. The man was in uniform, while the woman was in civilian attire, according to a report submitted to the Military Aviation Authority.
The Apache, part of the Army Air Corps’ 653 Squadron, is equipped with advanced weaponry, including a 30 mm cannon and Hellfire missiles. However, the two individuals involved were from the Royal Artillery, not the 653 Squadron. They were detained on-site until their respective chain of command arrived to address the situation.
The incident occurred in 2016 at the Otterburn Training Area in Northumberland but only recently came to light due to a computer system error, reported a publication. Following the episode, aircrew were instructed to secure helicopters more rigorously to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
