In a tragic incident, a child from Ontario, Canada, has died from rabies after coming into contact with a bat that was found in their bedroom. Confirmed health officials.
The case was disclosed by Dr. Malcolm Lock during a board meeting on Wednesday. As per Dr. Lock, the unnamed child was exposed to the rabies virus in an area north of Sudbury.
According to Dr. Lock, the child’s parents had discovered the bat in their bedroom but did not observe any signs of a bite or scratch on the child. As a result, the child was not vaccinated against rabies, a decision that would later prove fatal.
The child was eventually taken to the hospital after the incident in early September, where they tragically passed away. This marks the first case of rabies acquired domestically in Ontario since 1967.
Meanwhile, Dr Lock makes a striking revelation. In southern Ontario region, the percentage of bats carrying rabies has risen from less than 10% to 16% in recent years.
Hence due to rise in cases, he emphasized the importance of seeking medical attention if any form of exposure to bats occurs, even if no visible bite or scratch marks are present. “It’s crucial that anyone exposed to bats gets treatment and vaccination right away.” said Dr Lock.
