A Chinese divorce court has mandated a man to compensate his disabled wife with 30,000 yuan (approximately ₹352,000 or $4,200) after he referred to her as “trash”. As reported by a leading Chinese publication the court labelled the man, identified as Zhao, as a perpetrator of domestic abuse due to his frequent verbal insults towards his wife, identified as Qian.
The couple tied the knot in 2007 and welcomed two children, but their circumstances altered drastically after Ms. Qian became disabled following a traffic accident in 2015. Following the car accident, Mr. Zhao’s attitude towards his wife underwent a negative transformation, according to the outlet. He began displaying disrespect towards Ms. Qian, ignoring her, and subjecting her to verbal abuse. Upon filing for divorce, Ms. Qian consented and lodged a claim for compensation.

Over the course of several hearings, the court learned that Mr. Zhao exhibited no affection or concern for his wife. Instead, when Ms. Qian required additional support due to her disability, he consistently subjected her to humiliation and oppression. The court concluded that Mr. Zhao had inflicted harm upon Ms. Qian. It determined that his derogatory treatment towards his wife constituted psychological abuse, and his verbal assaults amounted to domestic violence.
In its verdict, the court ordered Mr. Zhao to provide Ms. Qian with compensation of 30,000 yuan and to be allocated only 40% of the value of jointly-owned property. Notably, China’s Anti-Domestic Violence Law of 2016 stipulates that perpetrators who cause severe injury or death to victims can face imprisonment for up to seven years.
