Former US President Donald Trump emerges victorious in the Republican primary in Illinois, as per The Hill’s report citing Decision Desk HQ. Trump has already surpassed the necessary delegate threshold for securing the Republican nominations, with his win in Illinois adding to his winning streak within the GOP.
Decision Desk HQ’s tracker indicates that there are 64 GOP delegates at stake in Illinois. This victory comes after President Joe Biden’s substantial win over Trump in Illinois by nearly 17 points in 2020, as well as Trump’s loss to former Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in the state in 2016.
Biden has secured the Democratic nod this year and is poised to gain around 147 delegates from Illinois, setting the stage for a rematch between the two in the presidential elections.
Trump officially clinched the Republican nomination on March 13, while Biden secured the Democratic nomination a day earlier. The upcoming rematch between Trump and Biden is anticipated to resemble the 2020 campaign, albeit with Trump facing 91 felony charges related to allegations of election manipulation, CNN reported.
These charges allege Trump’s involvement in the January 6, 2021, US Capitol insurrection, illegal acquisition of classified documents from the White House, and concealment of hush money payments to an adult film star before the 2016 election.
Despite these legal challenges, Trump presents a record of achievements and controversies for voters to evaluate. Meanwhile, Biden’s campaign strategy mirrors that of 2020, focusing on concerns regarding Trump’s governance style and economic performance.
Unlike Trump, Biden has not encountered a significant primary challenge, with Rep. Dean Phillips, his only rival in elected office, withdrawing from the race and endorsing Biden recently.
