In an age where digital privacy is increasingly at risk, German sexual health brand Billy Boy comes up with a new app, an invention called Camdom, which aspires to protect intimate moments from unwanted surveillance by making it impossible for any smartphone and other devices to record their audio or video without user consent. Here’s how it works and why it has begun to cause a global storm.
Camdom comes out as one of the reactions to a growing sense of intrusion of privacy into intimate, personal space. According to the developer of the app, Felipe Almeida, “Smartphones are now inseparable from people’s lives and hold vast amounts of sensitive data.” With such devices constantly used to capture and store content, there has never been a greater need for protection of privacy during intimate activities than now.
The Camdom acts as a digital condom, whereby no one will record your privates without permission. “Camdom is your digital condom, blocking anyone from taking pictures, filming or recording audio without your consent.” This is possible through the application of Bluetooth technology that disables microphones and cameras on various machines in close proximity, thus preventing recordings that have not been consented for.
Users need to turn on the application before they do any actual sexual activity, by just setting their smartphones together and swiping an imaginary button. Once activated, Camdom syncs all phones surrounding and immediately blocks the recording function of all devices. If one tries to break this lock then it sounds an alarm that alerts the user of privacy invasion. The application may contribute to the enhanced security because once set, all the devices will be locked simultaneously.
According to the cited paper of the company representative, “If one user attempts to leave, an alert triggers a risk of unauthorized recording.”
This feature gives peace of mind to people who value privacy, especially in these sensitive moments.
Being a Camdom app that is downloadable both on Android and iOS, it is therefore accessible to an end-user. The developer’s point of view is clearly visible in its functionality as they strive to provide more protection to those with high concern for their digital privacy in private settings.
Since the release of Camdom, it has been triggering mixed reactions online. The critical opinions are met with some user acceptance, which were justified in terms of privacy preservation at a time when most digital consent tends to be ignored. A user commented: “Finally, a safe precaution for Phone Sex.”. I even got to avoid the ‘I Love You’ virus. Others though, have commented on the unfortunate need for such an application in the modern world, one commenting “It’s sad that this is necessary in our society.”
Even with the diversified reactions, Camdom’s development indicates an initiative to discuss privacy while interacting with technology and intimacy proactively. This concept along with Innocean Berlin has brought into light consent as well as control of personal data in all private moments.
