EAM Jaishankar Meets Singapore’s Minister for Trade and Industry

EAM Jaishankar recently held a meeting with Singapore’s Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong, focusing on exploring fresh areas of cooperation with lasting implications. Reflecting on the discussions, Jaishankar expressed his enthusiasm for further developing these concepts during the ISMR meeting.

The historical relationship between India and Singapore was elevated to a Strategic Partnership in 2015, and this year, both countries had several ministerial interactions during the G20, where Singapore was invited as a guest country under India’s Presidency, according to a Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) press release.

During his visit, EAM Jaishankar is scheduled to meet his Singaporean counterpart and other key leaders. He will also preside over the regional conference of Indian Heads of Missions. In a related development, he chaired the regional conference of ASEAN and East Asia Ambassadors in Singapore, where discussions revolved around the regional situation and its potential implications for India.

Highlighting the strong ties between India and Singapore based on shared values, economic opportunities, and a convergence of interests on critical issues, the External Affairs Minister emphasized the value of insights provided by Indian Ambassadors in the formulation of policies.

Both India and Singapore are active members of various forums such as the East Asia Summit, G20, Commonwealth, Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), and Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS).

In a significant development earlier this year, the link between India’s UPI and Singapore’s PayNow was officially launched in the presence of PM Narendra Modi and Singaporean counterpart Lee Hsien Loong, underscoring the growing economic cooperation between the two countries.

Prior to his visit to Singapore, EAM Jaishankar had an official visit to Vietnam, where he engaged in meetings with several key figures, including Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and the Chairman of the External Relations Commission of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Le Hoai Trung. During the 18th India-Vietnam Joint Commission Meeting, both Ministers reviewed the progress of the India-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership across various fields, including economic, trade, scientific, and technological cooperation.
