A 6.8-magnitude earthquake occurred off the southern coast of the Philippines early Saturday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake’s epicenter was about 20 kilometers from the village of Barcelona on Mindanao island, at a depth of 17 kilometers (10.5 miles).
The local seismological agency reported that no damage is expected but cautioned residents about potential aftershocks.
The Philippines frequently experiences earthquakes as it is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for high seismic and volcanic activity. While most quakes are too weak to be felt, stronger and more destructive ones occur unpredictably, with no existing technology able to forecast their exact timing or location.
