The East Sepik Governor Allan Bird said, “So far, around 1,000 homes have been lost and the emergency crews are still assessing the impact.” Several villages near the bank have been effected by the flood due to the earthquake.
Papua New Guinea frequently experiences earthquakes due to its location atop the seismic “Ring of Fire,” a region of high tectonic activity spanning Southeast Asia and the Pacific basin. While these earthquakes typically do not result in significant damage in the thinly populated jungle highlands, they can lead to destructive landslides.
