Brazil’s Ban of X
Brazil’s judiciary has significant authority to demand the removal of specific online content, especially when it poses a threat to democracy or public safety. Recently, the Brazilian Supreme Court ordered a ban on X after accusing the platform of spreading disinformation that fueled unrest following the country’s controversial elections. Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who has spearheaded the investigation into disinformation, argues that X has facilitated the spread of harmful content that led to the January 2023 riots, where supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro stormed government buildings following his election defeat.
