Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Fawad Chaudhry arrested outside SC

Fawad Chaudhry, Senior Vice-President of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was detained outside the Supreme Court (SC) in Islamabad on Wednesday, according to Geo News.

The news comes amid a continuous crackdown on PTI leaders and workers. According to the news source, Fawad Chaudhry has been present inside the Pakistan Supreme Court since 11 a.m. (local time) in an attempt to avoid arrest.

After leaving the Supreme Court grounds, Chaudhry was apprehended. The Islamabad police apprehended Chaudhry and transferred him to the Secretariat Police Station under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Ordinance (MPO).

No petitioner arrested in such manner: Fawad Chaudhry

The Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaaf tweeted, “SVP @fawadchaudhry has been arrested outside Supreme Court despite having protective bail from IHC till 12th May. Law of the jungle is ruling in Pakistan.” Before his detention, PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry told reporters that the legal community had grown weak due to infighting. “Never has a petitioner been arrested in such a manner,” Fawad said as per the reports from Geo News.

He further stated that the Islamabad High Court had accepted his pre-arrest bail the day before, which he had shown to Islamabad police earlier in the day. According to Geo News, Chaudhry stated that the imprisonment of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan had caused a schism in the country. He stated that political opponents should be allowed room in order to foster speech.

Prior to the arrest of Fawad Chaudhry, PTI Secretary General Asad Umar was arrested from the premises of the Islamabad High Court.

In the meantime, Pakistan’s accountability court has given the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) an eight-day remand in the Al-Qadir Trust graft case to former Prime Minister Imran Khan, as reported by Samaa. Judge Muhammad Bashir of the Accountability Court had previously heard the matter and reserved his decision.

Pakistan’s top anti-corruption body seeks 14-day remand of Imran Khan

Country’s top anti-corruption organization requested 14-day physical remand of the former premier at the start of the trial, according to Samaa. Imran’s counsel argued that the NAB lacks jurisdiction in the case, and that the anti-graft organization also failed to release the inquiry findings.

He emphasised that Imran Khan has a fundamental right to a fair trial, “Imran Khan’s trial should be held in open court,” his attorney pleaded with the judge. A video was provided by the PTI’s official Twitter handle, after the hearing, Khan’s lawyer held a press conference in which he stated that Khan claimed in court that he was mistreated in jail and was not even permitted to use the lavatory.

The chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Imran Khan, was detained and brought before the accountability court at the Police Lines Headquarters on Tuesday. The previous prime minister will be investigated by the accountability bureau at the Police Lines. Following Imran Khan’s detention, protests erupted in Pakistan. Property has been extensively damaged as a result of the protests.
