The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, expressed grave concerns about the situation in Gaza, describing it as a humanitarian crisis that is taking an immense toll on the lives of children. He stated that Gaza is tragically becoming a place of great suffering and loss, particularly for its young population. Guterres emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire to prevent further human suffering.
He called upon all parties involved in the conflict, as well as the international community, to take immediate action to alleviate the collective suffering and to significantly increase humanitarian aid to Gaza. He pointed out the alarming number of UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) staff members who have lost their lives during the Israel-Hamas conflict, with a higher casualty count in recent weeks than ever before in the organization’s history.
The UN Secretary-General’s remarks came one month after the outbreak of hostilities initiated by Israel in response to an attack by Hamas, which led to a large number of casualties on both sides. Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant also stated that Israel plans to retain full control over Gaza’s security situation once the current conflict ends, emphasizing the intention to eliminate Hamas as a military organization and governing body in Gaza.
The situation in Gaza post-conflict remains uncertain, with concerns about Israel’s plans for governance and the need for humanitarian assistance. The recent violence has led to significant loss of life on both sides, with Israel planning to maintain security responsibility in Gaza for an indefinite period.
