“If anyone attacks India, forces will respond strongly”: Rajnath Singh, Caution issued regarding China border dispute.

In a thinly veiled reference to China, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said that India, though it had never launched aggression or occupied foreign territory, was fully capable of giving a strong response if attacked by any nation. Speaking at the NDTV Defense Summit 2024, Singh highlighted the significant transformation of India’s defense sector over the past decade. He emphasized the country’s commitment to self-sufficiency and its readiness to defend itself on land, in the air and at sea.

Highlighting India’s history of refraining from initiating conflict, Singh emphasized that the country has not invaded or interfered with any country. However, he made it clear that if India is challenged, it has the ability to respond effectively. The statement comes against the backdrop of a long-running military standoff between India and China in eastern Ladakh.

On achievements in the defense sector, Singh pointed out that since the Bharatiya Janata Party government came to power in 2014, defense has been a top priority. Emphasis was placed on achieving self-sufficiency, domestic production and export of defense equipment. Singh credited the government with a vision to differentiate its approach from previous administrations, arguing that the emphasis on India’s capabilities set it apart.

The Defense Secretary outlined key initiatives, including the establishment of a Ministry of Military Affairs and the creation of the position of Chief of Defense Staff, illustrating the government’s commitment to modernizing the military. He emphasized that while previous governments were somewhat skeptical and lacked confidence in India’s capabilities, the current administration has a vision to make India strong on the global stage.

Singh emphasized on strengthening India’s defense system by incorporating indigenous elements, thereby cultivating a sense of “Indianness” in the defense forces. He claimed that not only has India’s defense system become robust, but the country is also becoming a global power. Singh expressed confidence that India would not only achieve the status of a developed nation but also establish itself as a leading military power across the world.

In essence, Rajnath Singh’s remarks underline India’s commitment to self-reliance, readiness to defend its interests and significant advancements in the defense sector as per the vision of the current government. The statement comes amid ongoing geopolitical challenges, particularly long-standing border tensions with China.
