India-Bhutan Strengthen Bilateral Ties with Prime Ministerial Meetings and MoU Approvals

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay to the national capital, marking Tobgay’s first overseas visit since assuming office in February 2024. The leaders engaged in discussions to enhance the longstanding friendship and cooperation between India and Bhutan.

During their meeting, both Prime Ministers assessed the progress in various areas of bilateral partnership, highlighting infrastructure development, connectivity, energy, hydropower cooperation, people-to-people exchanges, and development cooperation as key focus areas. They reaffirmed their commitment to deepening these ties and strengthening the special and unique bilateral friendship.

Expressing gratitude for India’s support, Prime Minister Tobgay acknowledged India as a reliable and valued partner in Bhutan’s developmental priorities. He extended an invitation on behalf of King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck for Prime Minister Modi to visit Bhutan, which Modi graciously accepted, scheduling his visit for the upcoming week.

Taking to social media platform X after their meeting, PM Tobgay shared, “Wonderful to meet my friend, Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi. I thanked him for his steadfast support to Bhutan, and we discussed a range of issues to strengthen relations between Bhutan and India. Prime Minister Modi Ji also agreed to visit Bhutan soon … next week, in fact!”

In response, PM Modi expressed his pleasure at meeting his “friend” on Tobgay’s first overseas visit. He described their discussions as productive, covering various aspects of their unique partnership. PM Modi also conveyed his gratitude to the King of Bhutan and PM Tobgay for the invitation, emphasizing the warm and cordial ties shared by both nations.

Earlier this week, the Union Cabinet, under PM Modi’s leadership, approved the signing of three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between India and Bhutan. These MoUs encompass cooperation in the supply of petroleum products, energy efficiency, and collaboration in food safety measures, further solidifying the multifaceted cooperation between the two neighboring countries.
