India repatriates 17 pakistani nationals via attari-wagah border

The Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi said on Friday that India has deported 17 Pakistani nationals who were imprisoned in the country across the Attari-Wagah border.

“17 Pakistani nationals imprisoned in India were repatriated today via Attari-Wagah border after hectic efforts of @PakinIndia& @ForeignOfficePk& cooperation of Indian side. Our efforts will continue to repatriate all Pakistani prisoners from India on completion of their sentences,” tweeted the Pakistan High Commission of India. Earlier on Thursday, India repatriated a Pakistan national.

The Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi said on Friday that India has deported 17 Pakistani nationals who were imprisoned in the country across the Attari-Wagah border.

“In close coordination with @ForeignOfficePk & also the Indian side,a Pakistani national who was under imprisonment in India,was repatriated today via Attari-Wagah border. We will continue our efforts for early repatriation of those Pakistani prisoners who have completed their sentences,” tweeted the Pakistan High Commission of India.

In accordance with a long-standing arrangement, India and Pakistan exchanged lists of civilian detainees and fishermen in their custody earlier this month.

In a previous announcement on January 1, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that India has supplied details of 339 Pakistani civilian detainees and 95 Pakistani fishermen who were being detained in India. Similarly, Pakistan has supplied lists of 51 civilian detainees and 654 fishermen in its custody who are either Indians or are suspected to be Indians.

The Indian government demanded that civilian prisoners, missing Indian defence personnel, and fishermen, together with their boats, be released and repatriated from Pakistan’s hands as soon as possible.

“In this context, Pakistan was asked to expedite the release and repatriation of 631 Indian fishermen and 02 Indian civilian prisoners, who have completed their sentence and whose nationality has been confirmed and conveyed to Pakistan. In addition, Pakistan has been asked to provide immediate consular access to the remaining 30 fishermen and 22 civilian prisoners in Pakistan’s custody, who are believed to be Indian,” the MEA said.

According to the government, India remains committed to addressing all humanitarian issues, particularly those involving prisoners and fishermen in each other’s countries, on a priority basis.

In this connection, India has also requested Pakistan to take the required steps to confirm the nationality of 71 Pakistani inmates, including fishermen, whose repatriation is delaying due to a lack of nationality confirmation from Pakistan.

According to the External Affairs Ministry, Pakistan has been asked to protect the safety, security, and well-being of all Indian and suspected Indian civilian detainees and fishermen until their release and return to India.
