Indian-American Congressman Condemns Rising Attacks on Hindu Temples in the United States

Indian-American Congressman Shri Thanedar, in a meeting with the Hindu community, condemned the rising attacks that had been taking place on the Hindu Temples in America.  He recently engaged with members of the communit and addressed the issue that had had an alarming surge in the attacks targeting Hindu temples across the United States. Expressing grave concern over the escalating assaults, Thanedar emphasized the inadequate response from local law enforcement agencies in investigating these incidents.

During the interaction that was held on Monday, Thanedar underscored the palpable fear prevailing within the Hindu community residing in the States due to the recent surge in these attacks, stressing the on the urgent need for action over the issue. He lamented the lack of decisive action by law enforcement, highlighting the absence of suspects, arrests, or resolutions in addressing the issue.

In a proactive measure, Congressman Thanedar introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives on April 10, condemning Hinduphobia, anti-Hindu bigotry, and intolerance. The resolution, now under review by the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, aims to raise awareness among lawmakers and the Biden administration regarding the plight of the Hindu community in America.

Reflecting on the significance of bipartisan support, Thanedar emphasized that the resolution aligns with fundamental American values of freedom, equality, and racial justice. He pledged to persist in combating racism and advocating for justice, drawing parallels to his ongoing efforts in Detroit, Michigan.

Vijay Sadhawal, another prominent Indian-American present at the event, voiced apprehension regarding the bias of the American media towards Hindu Americans. He stated that the resolution was a pivotal step in amplifying the voice of the Hindu community and safeguarding their rights and interests in the country.

Sadhawal drew parallels between the current attacks on Hindu temples and the historical persecution faced by Kashmiri Pandits, urging swift action to prevent a similar fate for Hindu Americans. He underscored the urgency of recognizing and protecting the civil rights of the Hindu community to avert potential tragedies.

The resolution introduced by Congressman Thanedar emphasizes the need to fight against the stereotypes, disinformation, and discrimination faced by Hindu Americans. It also celebrates their contributions to the cultural tapestry of the United States and reaffirms the nation’s commitment to embracing diversity.

In recent years, there has been a concerning uptick in attacks targeting Hindu temples and communities, prompting widespread condemnation and calls for action. Organizations like the Hindu American Foundation have been vocal in documenting incidents of vandalism and hate speech directed towards Hindu institutions.

Notable among these incidents was the defacement of California’s Sherawali Temple, where pro-Khalistani slogans were inscribed on the walls. Similar acts of vandalism, such as the defacing of the Swaminarayan Mandir Vasana Sanstha with derogatory slogans, have underscored the urgency of addressing rising extremism and intolerance.

As the Hindu American community grapples with these challenges, it remains imperative for stakeholders, including policymakers, law enforcement agencies, and civil society, to collaborate effectively in safeguarding the rights and security of all citizens, irrespective of their religious affiliation.
