Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, known for his Indian heritage, has announced his intention to resign from both his position as Prime Minister (Taoiseach) and as the leader of the Fine Gael party ahead of the upcoming general election.
The 45-year-old leader made this announcement on Wednesday, citing personal and political reasons for his decision. He addressed reporters outside government buildings in Dublin, stating, “I am resigning as president and leader of Fine Gael effective today and will resign as the Taoiseach as soon as my successor is able to take up that office.”
Varadkar, who assumed office in 2017 and was Ireland’s youngest Prime Minister, expressed pride in the progress made during his tenure, emphasizing advancements towards a more equal and modern society.
While his resignation as Fine Gael leader does not automatically trigger a general election, it marks a significant shift in Irish politics. Varadkar indicated that he has no immediate plans for the future but intends to remain active in the Irish Parliament as a backbench lawmaker.
