Indian Student Dies In Ohio, Police Investigation Underway As Indian Consulate Extend Condolences

A student from India studying in the U.S. state of Ohio has passed away, as per a statement from the Indian Consulate in New York on Friday. The Consulate expressed deep sadness over the unfortunate death of Mr. Uma Satya Sai Gadde in Cleveland. According to the statement, local police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. The Consulate remains in contact with the deceased’s family in India and is providing all possible assistance, including facilitating the transport of Mr. Gadde’s remains back to India as soon as possible.

This incident marks the latest in a concerning series of tragic events impacting the Indian community in the U.S. Just since the start of 2024, there have been at least six deaths of Indian students and Indian-Americans. The alarming rise in attacks has caused much worry among the community.

Last month, 34-year-old Indian classical dancer Amarnath Ghosh was fatally shot in St. Louis, Missouri. In early February, 23-year-old Indian-American Purdue University student Sameer Kamath was found dead in a nature preserve in Indiana. On February 2nd, 41-year-old Indian-origin IT executive Vivek Taneja suffered life-threatening injuries during an assault outside a restaurant in Washington, D.C.

In light of the spate of violence targeting Indians and Indian-Americans, officials from the Indian Embassy in Washington and its consulates across the U.S. recently held a virtual meeting with 150 leaders and members of Indian student associations from 90 American universities. The discussion focused on student welfare and staying connected with the broader diaspora community.
