Iran Detains Dozens Of People Following Hamas Leader Ismail Haniyeh’s Death

Following the death of Hamas Chief Ismail Haniyeh in the capital Tehran, Iran has detained around two dozen people. As per the New York Times report, the arrested individuals include intelligence officers, military personnel, and staff of the military guesthouse based in New York.

Further, Iranian security forces did a detailed search of guesthouse premises. During the search, they arrested staff, seized electronic devices, and reviewed surveillance footage and guest lists.

In addition, senior military and intelligence officials were also questioned, and several were detained pending further probe.

Moreover, the compound, overseen by the IRGC, contained a room, used regularly by Haniyeh during his visits to Tehran.

Speaking of IRGC, the specialized unit of Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, will now probe the matter and in order to unveil the network behind this assassination, it is now looking for suspects.

What has happened so far?

Meanwhile for those unversed, in the early hours of July 31, Hamas Chief  Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Tehran. He was killed due to airstrike.

Since his death, Iran and Hamas officials continue to allege, that it was Israel who orchestrated the death. Interestingly, this assertion is also backed by many US officials. However, Israel hasn’t taken the responsibility of the attack.

But as per Telegraph report, Israel initially planned to assassinate Haniyeh in May during his visit to Tehran for former Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s funeral. But that time, the mission was withdrawn due to presence of huge crowd.

Speaking to Telegraph, two Iranian officials revealed that two agents who were under Mossad has established devices in three rooms of IRGC guesthouse separately.

Moreover, the officials of IRGC also claim that Mossad utilized agents of Ansar-al-Mahdi protection unit (group who safeguards high-ranking officials).
