A knife attack in the eastern French city of Mulhouse on Saturday resulted in the death of one civilian and left two police officers seriously injured. French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the incident, calling it an “Islamist terror act” and reaffirming the government’s commitment to fighting terrorism.

Suspect on Terror Watchlist Arrested

Authorities identified the suspect as a 37-year-old man who was already on a terror prevention watchlist known as FSPRT. The watchlist monitors individuals suspected of radicalization and potential terrorist activities. The suspect was arrested at the scene.

According to France’s national anti-terror prosecutors unit (PNAT), the suspect first attacked municipal police officers while shouting “Allahu Akbar” (God is greatest). Witnesses confirmed hearing the phrase multiple times. During the assault, a civilian passerby intervened but was fatally injured. Officials later identified the victim as a 69-year-old Portuguese national.

President Macron and Government Response

Prosecutor Nicolas Heitz stated that the two police officers sustained severe injuries, with one suffering a wound to the carotid artery and the other to the thorax. Three additional officers sustained minor injuries during the attack.

President Macron emphasized that there was “no doubt” that the attack was a terrorist act. He vowed to continue efforts to “eradicate terrorism on our soil.” Prime Minister Francois Bayrou also condemned the incident, stating, “Fanaticism has struck again, and we are in mourning.”

Security Measures and Investigation Underway

Following the attack, police established a security perimeter around the area, and military units were deployed as backup. Forensic teams arrived to gather evidence. The incident occurred just before 4:00 PM (1500 GMT) during a public demonstration.

The PNAT has launched an investigation into the attack for murder and attempted murder “in connection with a terrorist enterprise.” Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau was expected to visit the scene later on Saturday to assess the situation and oversee security measures.

Union sources revealed that the suspect, who was born in Algeria, had been under judicial supervision and house arrest. He was also subject to an expulsion order from France but had remained in the country.

Shock and Mourning in Mulhouse

Mulhouse Mayor Michele Lutz expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating on Facebook, “Horror has seized our city.” She confirmed that the attack was being investigated as an act of terrorism but noted that the judiciary would officially determine the final classification.

During a visit to France’s agriculture fair, President Macron extended his condolences, saying, “The solidarity of the nation is with the attack victim and his family.” The French government has pledged to take all necessary steps to prevent future acts of terrorism and protect its citizens.
