Israelis Share Traumatic Moments During Hamas Rocket Attack: ‘No Shelter, Rocket Hit Building’

The Israel-Hamas conflict persists, inflicting profound disruption on the lives of Israeli civilians who find themselves compelled to flee their homes in search of safety. In Ashkelon, a city in southern Israel, residents endure the daily dread and unpredictability brought about by this prolonged battle.

Yaacov, an Israeli citizen residing in Ashkelon, shared his harrowing experience, recounting, “We came here because a rocket fell on our building… we have no shelter, we escaped thanks to local administration and they suggested us to come here to this hotel and this is a good place. My 11-year-old son, 2-year-old daughter, my wife and I are staying here.”

The distress and urgency conveyed by Yaacov and his family echo the widespread anxiety and upheaval gripping the region. Ashkelon, like numerous other Israeli municipalities, has borne the brunt of rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip, prompting an urgent need for secure havens for its residents.

Galaia, another Ashkelon resident, expressed a similar sentiment, stating, “My children and family are here (hotel) because rockets fell on the roof of our neighbor’s house, our windowpanes were broken… for one week, we have been staying here, now we don’t know if this place is safe… we want a new place… I want to tell my Prime Minister that… finish this terrorism as soon as possible.”

Galaia’s plea mirrors the exasperation and yearning for an end to the persistent conflict. The emotional toll on families and individuals cannot be overstated, as the daily specter of rocket attacks and the trauma of seeking refuge in unfamiliar surroundings continue to weigh heavily on their lives.

As the conflict persists, Israeli residents like Yaacov and Galaia hold onto hope for an end to the violence and a return to normalcy. Their accounts stand as a stark reminder of the human toll exacted by this enduring conflict and the pressing need for a peaceful resolution that can bring stability and security to the region.

As of the latest reports, the conflict has claimed the lives of at least 900 Israelis, leaving over 2,600 individuals injured. On the other side, over 770 Palestinians have lost their lives in Israeli air raids following a potent counter-offensive. The Health Ministry in Gaza has reported that at least 770 Palestinians have been killed, with 4,000 wounded, including 140 children and 120 women.

In a resolute address to the nation, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that while Israel did not initiate this war, it is determined to see it through to its conclusion. He asserted, “Israel is at war. We didn’t want this war. It was forced upon us in the most brutal and savage way. But though Israel didn’t start this war, Israel will finish it.”
