Japan Introduces E-Visa for Indian Tourists: Here’s How to Apply

It's important to note that E-Visa will be issued after the payment is processed. Additionally, during the application process, individuals may be requested to appear in person at the Japanese overseas establishment with jurisdiction over their place of residence for an interview.

Japan Introduces E-Visa for Indian Tourists: Here’s How to Apply

Japan has initiated the issuance of electronic visas (eVisas) to Indian tourists, commencing from April 1, 2024. This new system eliminates the need for physical visa stickers in passports, streamlining the application process.

Applicants can now conveniently apply for visas electronically through designated Japan Visa Application Centres operated by VFS Global. The Japan eVisa, tailored for tourism purposes, grants a single-entry short-term visa with a maximum stay of up to 90 days in Japan. This eligibility extends to both Indian citizens and foreign nationals residing in India.

To guide you through the application process, follow these step-by-step instructions:

Step 1: Visit the official website of the Japan Visa Application Centre managed by VFS Global at https://visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/jpn/ to initiate your application.

Step 2: Select the “Temporary Visitor Visa” option, carefully review all visa requirements, download the application form, complete it accurately, print it, and ensure all fields are filled correctly. Additionally, prepare photocopies of the necessary documents required for the single-entry short-term tourism visa.

Step 3: Book an appointment to submit your application at the Visa Application Centre. Once booked, you will receive an appointment confirmation email containing the letter of appointment.

Step 4: Present the completed visa application form at the centre during your appointment. Subsequently, wait for an email notification indicating when your decision is ready for collection. You can track the status of your visa application online using the reference number from the invoice or receipt.

Upon approval, successful applicants will receive an electronic visa instead of a traditional visa sticker. However, travellers must display a “visa issuance notice” on their mobile devices upon arrival at the airport.

Step 5: During airport check-in, present the “visa issuance notice” on your device. The travel agency will provide a “Visa Issuance Notice” containing a two-dimensional barcode. Simply scan the barcode using your device, input the necessary details to access the notice, and tap “Display” to view the electronic “visa issuance notice.”

It’s important to note that E-Visa will be issued after the payment is processed. Additionally, during the application process, individuals may be requested to appear in person at the Japanese overseas establishment with jurisdiction over their place of residence for an interview.
