US Vice President Kamala Harris has effectively secured the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, marking a significant milestone in her political career. This sets up a November election battle against Republican Donald Trump.
Kamala Harris was the only candidate on the ballot during a five-day electronic vote by nearly 4,000 party convention delegates. She will be officially nominated at a Chicago convention later this month.
“I am honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee for President of the United States,” said Kamala Harris, 59, in a phone call to a party celebration after securing enough votes by the second day of the voting process.
Since President Joe Biden ended his reelection bid two weeks ago, Kamala Harris has taken full control of the party. No other Democrats challenged her, making her the first Black and South Asian woman to secure a major party’s nomination.
Kamala Harris is set to start her campaign next week, touring seven key battleground states with her soon-to-be-announced running mate.
Due to Ohio’s August 7 deadline for submitting candidate names for the November election, the Democratic Party opted for a virtual nomination process, similar to the 2020 pandemic-hit vote. The virtual roll call officially kicks off the 2024 convention, with the main festivities beginning when party members gather in Chicago on August 19.
