Russia has placed Karim Khan, a British prosecutor at the Hague-based International Criminal Court, on its “wanted” list two months after the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Politico, a German-owned political publication published in the United States.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Putin and Russian official Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova in March of this year in connection with an alleged plot to deport Ukrainian minors to Russia. The ICC held Putin “responsible for war crimes” committed by Russian soldiers in Ukraine during the year-long conflict.
Karim Khan’s photograph and personal information were apparently viewable in the Russian Interior Ministry’s database, where he is marked as “wanted on felony charges,” Politico reported on Friday, citing Russian independent media site Mediazona.
Russia launched criminal procedures against Karim Khan in March
In March, Russia launched criminal procedures against Khan and three ICC justices, alleging that they had committed “signs of crimes” under Russian law.
According to Politico, this includes, in Karim Khan’s case, deliberately accusing an innocent person of a crime and, in the judges’ cases, purposefully unjust detention.
In a statement issued in March, the Hague-based court stated that Putin”is allegedly responsible for the war crime of unlawful deportation of the population (children) and that of unlawful transfer of population (children) from occupied areas of Ukraine to the Russian Federation.”
According to Al Jazeera, it also issued a warrant for the arrest of Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova, the Russian Federation’s commissioner for children’s rights in the president’s office. According to the UN genocide convention, “forcibly transferring children of the group to another group” is one of five crimes that can be punished as genocide.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Kremlin has broken connections with a number of major international bodies, further isolating the country from the West.
In March of last year, Russia was ejected from the Council of Europe, the continent’s primary human rights monitor, for its invasion of Ukraine.
