Amid the ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada, Canadian MP Chandra Arya has raised concerns about extremist elements targeting and intimidating Hindu-Canadians, urging them to return to India. Arya, a member of the Liberal Party of Canada, the same party as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, voiced his apprehensions regarding these developments.
Chandra Arya took to social media to convey, “A few days ago, Khalistan movement leader in Canada and the president of Sikhs for Justice, which organizes the so-called referendum, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun attacked Hindu Canadians, asking us to leave Canada and go back to India.” He shared that he has been informed of Hindu-Canadians feeling fearful following this targeted attack and urged them to maintain their composure while staying vigilant. He encouraged them to promptly report any instances of Hinduphobia to local law enforcement agencies.
Additionally, Chandra Arya highlighted that the Khalistan movement leader aims to incite reactions from Hindu Canadians and create divisions between the Hindu and Sikh communities in Canada. Nevertheless, Arya clarified that the majority of Canadian Sikhs do not support the Khalistan movement and share strong familial and cultural bonds with the Hindu-Canadian community.
Chandra Arya characterized this direct attack on Hindu Canadians as an escalation of recent incidents targeting Hindu temples and commemorations of the assassination of Hindu Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by terrorists. He emphasized Canada’s commitment to upholding high moral values and the rule of law. He expressed dismay at the glorification of terrorism and hate crimes, which he believes are allowed in the name of freedom of expression.
Expressing his concerns about Hindu Canadians being perceived as vulnerable targets, Arya highlighted their substantial contributions to Canada’s socio-economic prosperity. He called upon Hindu-Canadians to maintain their composure while remaining vigilant and to take pride in their Hindu faith and cultural heritage.
The diplomatic tensions between India and Canada have escalated recently, with Canadian PM Justin Trudeau alleging India’s involvement in the killing of a designated terrorist, Hardeep Nijjar, in Canada. India has vehemently denied these allegations, resulting in diplomatic expulsions by both nations. Hardeep Nijjar, the chief of the Khalistan Tiger Force and a designated terrorist in India, was fatally shot outside a Gurdwara in Canada in June.
