U.S. authorities made a significant breakthrough in their fight against drug trafficking, On Thursday, arresting two major figures in the narcotics world: Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada and Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Lopez. Their detention marks a crucial moment in the ongoing battle against drug cartels and could potentially reshape the Mexican criminal landscape.
Ismael Zambada, a notorious drug kingpin and co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel, and Joaquin Guzman Lopez, the son of the infamous drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzman, were apprehended after arriving in El Paso via a private plane. Zambada, believed to be in his 70s, and Guzman Lopez, in his 30s, face numerous charges in the United States related to drug trafficking, including the distribution of fentanyl, which has become the leading cause of death among Americans aged 18 to 45.
The arrests were confirmed by U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, who stated that the two men are charged “for heading the Cartel’s criminal operations, including its deadly fentanyl manufacturing and trafficking networks.”
The arrest was initially reported by Reuters, with further confirmation from the Justice Department. According to a worker at Santa Teresa Airport, near El Paso, a Beechcraft King Air landed on the runway where federal agents were waiting. “Two individuals got off the plane… and were calmly taken into custody,” said the worker, who chose to remain anonymous for safety reasons.

The U.S. authorities had previously offered a $15 million reward for Zambada’s capture and a $5 million bounty for Guzman Lopez. The Sinaloa Cartel, known for trafficking drugs to over 50 countries, is considered one of the most powerful criminal organizations in Mexico.
Zambada and Guzman Lopez represent two different eras of drug trafficking. Zambada is known for his “old-school” approach, operating discreetly and avoiding public attention. In contrast, Guzman Lopez and his brothers, collectively known as Los Chapitos, have gained notoriety for their flashy and violent methods. The sons of El Chapo, including Ovidio Guzman, who was arrested and extradited to the U.S. last year, are known for their aggressive tactics and high-profile criminal activities.
The arrest of both Zambada and Guzman Lopez could potentially lead to instability in Sinaloa, where their power struggles and the power vacuum might trigger violent conflicts. Previous high-profile arrests have often led to significant infighting within cartels and increased violence in their territories.
The arrests were part of a coordinated effort by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). Over the past year, U.S. authorities have intensified their efforts against Zambada and Guzman Lopez, focusing on fentanyl smuggling and the flow of precursor chemicals used in illicit drug labs.
An investigation published earlier by Reuters highlighted the ease with which fentanyl precursor chemicals can be purchased online from Chinese suppliers, further complicating the fight against this deadly drug. U.S. Attorney General Garland emphasized the severity of the fentanyl crisis, stating, “Fentanyl is the deadliest drug threat our country has ever faced, and the Justice Department will not rest until every single cartel leader, member, and associate responsible for poisoning our communities is held accountable.”
