MEA MoS V Murleedharan Meets US Secretary Blinken in Rio

Union Minister of State V Murleedharan engaged in a brief discussion with United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Thursday on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers meeting in Rio.

Sharing the interaction on social media platform ‘X’, the MoS stated, “Chatted briefly with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken at the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Rio.”

This meeting comes as Brazil assumed the presidency from India on December 20, 2023, marking the first ministerial meeting under the Brazilian Presidency, according to an official release from the Ministry of External Affairs.

On Wednesday, Union Minister of State represented India at the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Brazil, reaffirming New Delhi’s strong support for Brazil during its presidency of the summit.

Expressing his sentiments, Muraleedharan shared on ‘X’, “Honored to represent India at G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Rio. During my address at a session on ‘G20’s role in dealing with ongoing international tensions’.”

In discussions concerning the Russia-Ukraine conflict, India stressed the urgent need for a return to dialogue and diplomacy.

Regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict, India reiterated its stance on a two-state solution. MoS Muraleedharan condemned terrorism in all forms and emphasized the importance of preventing further escalation of conflict in the Middle East.

The Minister also highlighted the significance of ensuring the security of high seas and the safety of sea lanes of communication. He emphasized that the G20, as an economic forum, should prioritize Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and climate change in its discussions.

Furthermore, MoS Muraleedharan emphasized the necessity to address geopolitical issues constructively and find common ground for resolution.

The G20 Foreign Ministers have been convening as a group since 2012, with the FMM in Rio marking the 10th meeting of its kind.

In a new development, Brazil introduced a Working Group on the Empowerment of Women and an Engagement Group named “Judiciary 20” for this meeting.

Additionally, on the sidelines of the G20 FMM, the MoS will participate in bilateral meetings with partner countries from the Global South, strengthening diplomatic ties and cooperation.
