Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, speaking at the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio on Saturday, emphasized that nations like India and China have a significant role to play in resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Meloni’s comments followed a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, highlighting the increasing international focus on the crisis.
During her address at the forum, Meloni underscored the necessity for global powers to choose between supporting international law or succumbing to chaos. “It is obvious that if the rules of international law are broken, we will see a multiplication of chaos and crises. However, with such fragmentation, economic globalization and adherence to these rules will become incompatible,” Meloni said. She elaborated, “This is what I also conveyed to my Chinese counterparts. Nations like China and India must and can play a crucial role in resolving the Ukraine conflict.”

Meloni’s remarks came shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, acknowledged India’s potential contribution. “We respect our friends and partners who are sincerely interested in addressing and resolving the issues related to the conflict. China, Brazil, India… I am in contact with my partners and believe that these leaders, with whom we have strong relations of trust, are genuinely interested in offering assistance,” Putin stated.
The Italian Prime Minister’s comments also followed her meeting with President Zelensky at the Ambrosetti Forum. The two leaders discussed the current situation in Ukraine, including urgent needs ahead of winter, and the implementation of the G7’s decision to allocate nearly USD 50 billion from frozen Russian assets to Ukraine. Zelensky’s office highlighted that the Ukrainian President expressed gratitude for the military and technical assistance provided and stressed the urgency of delivering necessary weapons.
Meloni reiterated Italy’s steadfast support for Ukraine and its commitment to both Ukraine’s defense and a lasting peace. The discussions also covered the restoration and reconstruction of Ukraine’s infrastructure, with particular emphasis on energy systems, ahead of the Ukraine Recovery Conference scheduled to take place in Italy in 2025.
In her forum address, Meloni also raised concerns about the potential destabilization of the global geopolitical and economic landscape, reaffirming her belief that influential global actors like China and India could play a pivotal role in resolving the conflict.
