An alleged Israeli airstrike on a hospital in Gaza City on Tuesday has led to a devastating loss of life, with conflicting reports emerging about the cause and responsibility for the tragic event. Health authorities in the Hamas-run enclave have reported that the strike claimed the lives of hundreds of people, painting a harrowing picture of the toll taken by the conflict.
“Gaza civil defense chief, speaking on Al-Jazeera television, indicated that the death toll from the explosion at Al-Ahli al-Arabi Hospital has exceeded 300,” stated the official, underscoring the magnitude of the catastrophe. However, initial reports from the Gaza Health Ministry had suggested an even higher toll, with at least 500 deaths.
Amidst the chaos, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) were quick to respond, stating that the incident is under review and they have not yet confirmed any direct involvement in the strike. Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the IDF spokesman, emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation before drawing any definitive conclusions. He mentioned, “There are a lot of airstrikes, a lot of failed rockets, and a lot of fake reports by Hamas.”
In a statement addressing the escalating tensions, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen emphasized Israel’s unwavering commitment to self-defense and the elimination of threats posed by Hamas. Minister Cohen clarified that Israel did not initiate the conflict but was forced to respond to unrelenting aggression from Hamas. He condemned the appalling acts of violence, including the reported torture of infants and the killing of innocent women, categorically denouncing the perpetrators as “monsters.”
“Gaza will no longer be a threat to Israel or anyone else. We will not agree that the Hamas will have any power in Gaza or in any other place,” Minister Cohen declared firmly, outlining Israel’s stance. He called for international support in combating Hamas, asserting that Israel remains dedicated to upholding international humanitarian laws to safeguard innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.
As the conflict continues to escalate, international pressure mounts for an immediate ceasefire, underscoring the urgent need to find a resolution to the enduring Israel-Palestine conflict. Minister Cohen reiterated, “Israel’s war is a just war. We are acting in self-defense, eliminating threats, and the enemy that aims to kill and destroy us.”
Cohen further highlighted the necessity of confronting Hamas, revealing, “So far we have eliminated 1,000 terrorists.” He criticized the militant group for using the people of Gaza as human shields, pointing out their blatant disregard for civilian lives. “The goal is to prevent peace in our area and to work for escalation through terror and the murder of innocent people,” Cohen asserted. “Right now, they don’t even care about the people of Gaza. They’re using them as human protection.”
