In a significant milestone event, Eric Garcetti, the United States Ambassador to India presented a passport to the one millionth visa holder and her spouse in Delhi on Thursday. During the passport handover, Ambassador Garcetti remarked, “…this year, we are immensely proud as we have successfully processed over 1 million visa applications.”
In a conversation with a news agency, Ambassador Garcetti elaborated on the efforts made to achieve this feat, stating, “Prime Minister Modi and President Biden had expressed their desire to streamline and expedite the visa process. As a result, the Ministry of External Affairs here in India approved the allocation of additional resources, particularly in Hyderabad, and expanded the workforce dedicated to visa processing. This, coupled with improvements in our systems and a concerted effort, has culminated in the processing of one million visa applications this year. Today, we officially celebrate this achievement, but we must also stay prepared for the future.”
The U.S. Embassy in India shared the momentous occasion on X (formerly Twitter), declaring, “#Missionto1M accomplished! We are excited to announce that the U.S. Mission to India has reached and exceeded our goal of processing one million visa applications in 2023! We remain committed to making further progress in the upcoming months, offering more Indian applicants the opportunity to travel to the United States,” the post read.
In an official statement, the embassy highlighted, “Indians now constitute over 10 percent of all visa applicants worldwide, encompassing 20 percent of all student visa applicants and 65 percent of all H&L-category (employment) visa applicants. The United States warmly welcomes this growth and continues to be open to Indian applicants seeking various opportunities in the U.S.”
