Pakistan flour crisis worsens: Prices skyrocket amidst wheat shortage

Pakistan is experiencing its biggest flour crisis in history, with regions of the country reporting wheat shortages and stampedes in Khyber Panhtunkhwa, Sindh, and Balochistan provinces.

According to an article, tens of thousands of people spend hours each day trying to buy subsidised sacks of flour, which are already in low supply on the market. People typically cluster around cars, shoving each other as mini-trucks and vans led by armed guards distribute flour. Several fights have been recorded at flour merchants and tandoors.

Wheat and flour prices have surged as a result of Pakistan’s protracted turmoil, stated reports.

In Karachi, flour is priced between Rs 140 and Rs 160 per kilogramme. In Islamabad and Peshawar, a 10 kg bag of flour costs Rs 1,500 per kilogramme, while a 20 kg bag of flour costs Rs 2,800. The price of flour in Punjab province has risen to Rs 160 per kilogramme.

Balochistan’s Minister for Food, Zamarak Achakzai, has stated that the province’s wheat store has “totally run out.” He stated that Balochistan urgently need 400,000 bags of wheat and warned that the problem might worsen.

Similarly, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been experiencing the biggest flour crisis in its history, with a bag of 20-kilogram flour selling for Rs 3100 after the government failed to regulate the price of food.
