Pakistan: Imran Khan Makes Renewed Calls For investigating May 9 Violence

Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan reiterated demand for a judicial inquiry into the May 9 violence and the alleged rigging in the February 8 elections.

The founder of PTI also called upon the Chief Justice of Pakistan to consider the petitions filed by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI). He requested Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa to establish a judicial commission for investigating the issue. Khan reiterated his demand for a judicial investigation into purported electoral manipulation while addressing reporters following his presence at a court session related to a corruption case worth 190 million pounds. The ex-Prime Minister stated that the authorities were exploiting the events of May 9 as an excuse to undermine his party, following the ‘London plan.’

‘The culprits could have been identified through CCTV footage, but these have been stolen. Those behind the footage theft were responsible for the May 9 episode’ Khan said. He alleged that the closure of cases related to the Sharif family and President Asif Ali Zardari was “part of the London plan,”

Large-scale Violent demonstrations broke out on May 9 of the previous year following the apprehension of Imran Khan in relation to a corruption investigation. The scenario escalated significantly as protesters targeted military facilities. The general elections held on February 8 in Pakistan were met with controversy. PTI, along with several other parties, raised concerns about internet disruptions, widespread electoral fraud, and an absence of fair competition. Additionally, the former Prime Minister stated that PTI would not recognize the validity of the Senate elections due to the belief that the National Assembly resulted from a manipulated process initially.
