The Supreme Court of Pakistan will hear a petition filed by Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, on December 10.
Khan is requesting the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the events surrounding May 9, 2023, a day that witnessed nationwide unrest following his arrest.
A 7-member constitutional bench, led by Justice Aminuddin Khan, will preside over the case, according to the Supreme Court’s cause list released on Friday.
Khan’s petition is focused on two pivotal incidents: the violent riots that erupted after his arrest on May 9 and PTI’s “final call” protest on November 26. He has called for an impartial inquiry to uncover the truth behind both events, which have had lasting political and social consequences in the country.
Imran Khan announced the formation of a 5-member committee tasked with negotiating with the government over 2 key demands: the release of under-trial political prisoners and the establishment of a judicial commission to investigate the May 9 and November 26 incidents.
The committee is made up of senior PTI leaders, including Omar Ayub Khan, Ali Amin Gandapur, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Salman Akram Raja, and Asad Qaiser.
The PTI chairman reiterated these demands on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, stressing the need for a commission composed of the Supreme Court’s senior-most judges to ensure an independent and transparent inquiry. He also called for the release of political prisoners, arguing that their detention is politically motivated and unjust.
Imran Khan warned that if the government does not meet these demands, PTI would resort to “civil disobedience, reduction of remittances, and a boycott movement.” His call for a judicial commission follows the widespread violence that erupted after his arrest on May 9, which sparked protests that lasted over 24 hours and left a trail of destruction across the country.
In addition to the petition regarding May 9 and November 26, Imran Khan has also filed a separate petition alleging rigging in Pakistan’s general elections held in February 2023. A hearing for this case is set for December 11.
These legal battles are crucial to PTI’s ongoing political struggle. The outcomes of these petitions could influence the future of Pakistan’s political landscape, as Imran Khan pushes for accountability and transparency in the wake of the tumultuous events of this year.
