Three individuals perished in an explosion followed by a fire that engulfed an eight-story building in Paris on Sunday evening, as reported by Le Parisien, a French daily newspaper. The cause of the blast is currently unidentified. Situated in the 11th arrondissement of Paris, initial reports indicate that the explosion occurred before a fire erupted on the 7th floor of a building on Rue de Charonne.
“The neighbors do not understand what could have triggered this explosion, because there is no gas in the building,” Luc Lebon, deputy mayor of the 11th arrondissement, told Le Parisien.
Despite residents of the building denying any gas-related issues, authorities have not dismissed the possibility of a gas leak. An investigation has been initiated for “destruction by fire or dangerous means” and “involuntary homicide,” with detectives from the capital’s 2nd judicial police district tasked to determine the cause of the explosion, as reported by Le Parisien. Following the incident, occupants of nearby buildings were evacuated but later allowed to return home. Further details are awaited.
This marks the third occurrence of an explosion within a structure in Paris in recent years, resulting in multiple fatalities. According to Le Parisien, on January 12, 2019, an explosion on Rue de Trévise claimed four lives. Similarly, on June 21, 2023, an explosion at 277 Rue Saint-Jacques led to the deaths of three individuals.
