Amid Escalating tensions in south china sea, Philippines has recently slammed violent actions of Chinese maritime authorities against Vietnamese fishermen near the Paracel Islands on September 29, 2024.
Issuing a statement condemning China’s actions, Philippines National Security Adviser, Secretary Eduardo M. Año said “We strongly denounce the violent and illegal actions taken by Chinese maritime authorities against Vietnamese fishermen near the Paracel Islands on September 29. This unjustified assault, which injured 10 fishermen and damaged their vessels, has no place in international relations.”
Further, Año also emphasized, that such actions are in direct violation of international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and breach fundamental principles of human decency. “Fishermen, as vulnerable workers at sea, should be protected, not harmed.” he stated. “The Philippines has always advocated for peaceful resolution of disputes in the South China Sea and opposes any use of violence or coercion, especially against civilian fishermen, to advance territorial claims.” added Año.
Additionally, Año added, “China must respect international maritime laws and immediately cease any hostile activities that put the lives and livelihoods of civilian sailors at risk. The Philippines remains committed to upholding peace, security, and the rule of international law.”
Meanwhile, the United States has also expressed deep concern over the incident. Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, called on China to stop its dangerous and destabilizing behavior in the South China Sea, urging them to respect the rights of nations and civilians in the region.
