The new St. James Jetty and Airstrip, as well as six community development projects, will be inaugurated on Thursday at Agalega Island in Mauritius by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his counterpart Pravind Jugnauth. An announcement from the Prime Minister’s Office stated that the two leaders will launch these initiatives at 1:00 pm via video conference. The PMO statement said, “The launch of these projects is evidence of the strong and long-standing development partnership between India and Mauritius.” Along with improving maritime security, projects will improve Agalega’s connection to Mauritius’ mainland.
The Prime Minister’s Office stated, “The inauguration of these projects is a testimony to the robust and decades-old development partnership between India and Mauritius.
“The projects will fulfil the demand for better connectivity between mainland Mauritius and Agalega, strengthen maritime security and foster socio-economic development,” it added.
According to the press release, the inauguration of these projects is noteworthy because it follows the February 12 launch of the RuPay Card and Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services in Mauritius by Prime Minister Modi and his counterpart Jugnauth. During the launch, Prime Minister Modi stated that new responsibilities for uniting partners with India are being implemented through India’s Unified Payment Interface (UPI).
“Today is a special day for three friendly countries in the Indian Ocean region. Today we are connecting our historical relations in a modern digital way. This is proof of our commitment to the development of our people,” PM Modi said in a virtual ceremony that launched UPI services in Sri Lanka and Mauritius today.
He said that through Fintech connectivity, not only cross-border transactions but also cross-border connections will be strengthened.
“Through Fintech connectivity, not only cross-border transactions but also cross-border connections will be strengthened. India’s Unified Payments Interface i.e. UPI is now performing a new responsibility – Uniting Partners with India,” PM Modi said.
Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Mauritius Prime Minister Praveen Jugnauth were also present at the event which launched India’s UPI services in the two island countries.
The prime minister of Mauritius, Pravind Jugnauth, stated that the relationship between India and Mauritius has taken on new significance with the introduction of digital payment connectivity. “It is a great pleasure to be here with all of you on this historic occasion,” he said. The domestic card in Mauritius will be the Rupay card, which is co-branded with our national payment switch, the MoCAS. India and Mauritius have deep cultural, economic, and interpersonal ties that go back many centuries. We are adding yet another level to this relationship today.”
