PM Modi unveils bust of Mahatma Gandhi in Japan’s Hiroshima, says it will take forward idea of non-violence

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in Japan at Fumio Kishida’s invitation to attend the G7 Summit, presented a bust of Mahatma Gandhi in Hiroshima.

PM Modi paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi after the bust was unveiled. On the invitation of Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Prime Minister Modi arrived in Hiroshima on Friday to attend the G7 Summit.

PM Modi told media in Hiroshima after presenting the bust of Mahatma Gandhi that the name “Hiroshima” still frightens people throughout the world.

“During my visit to Japan for the G7 Summit, I had the opportunity to unveil a bust of Mahatma Gandhi,” he remarked. The Mahatma Gandhi bust in Hiroshima will advance the concept of nonviolence.”

“It is a great moment for me to know that the Bodhi tree that I gifted to the Japanese PM has been planted here in Hiroshima so that people can understand the importance of peace when they come here. I pay my respect to Mahatma Gandhi,” PM Modi added.

The G7 leaders are presently in Japan for the G7 Summit, which will be held in Hiroshima from May 19 to 21. Notably, Japan will take over the G7 presidency in 2023.

The Summit is an annual international gathering of the leaders of France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Italy, and Canada (in descending order of rotating presidency), as well as the European Union (EU).

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Hiroshima on Friday, members of the Indian diaspora gathered at a hotel. “Bharat Mata ki Jai” and “Vande Mataram” were applauded. They also chanted slogans in support of Prime Minister Modi.

Notably, the G7 grouping includes Japan, Italy, Canada, France, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany. Japan has invited leaders from Australia, Brazil, Comoros, Cook Islands, India, Indonesia, South Korea, and Vietnam as part of its G7 Presidency.

The G7 leaders are currently in Japan to attend the G7 Summit scheduled to be held in Hiroshima from May 19-21. Notably, Japan assumed the G7 Presidency in 2023.
