PM Modi: India, Greece Aim to Double Trade by 2030

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed the visit of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to India as a testament to the strengthening strategic partnership between the two countries. The Prime Minister noted the deepening cooperation in defence and security sectors as a reflection of the mutual trust shared by India and Greece.

Following bilateral and delegation-level talks, Prime Minister Modi announced ambitious plans to double bilateral trade by the year 2030. He welcomed PM Mitsotakis and his delegation to India, highlighting the significance of the visit after a 16-year gap since the last visit of a Greek Prime Minister.

The discussions between the two leaders were described by PM Modi as “meaningful and useful,” focusing on exploring new opportunities across various sectors. These sectors include agriculture, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, technology, innovation, skill development, and space cooperation. Shipping and connectivity were also identified as high-priority areas for both nations.

PM Modi emphasized the common interests and priorities shared by India and Greece in combatting terrorism. He announced the establishment of a Working Group for defence and security, aiming to enhance mutual coordination on challenges such as defence, cyber security, counter-terrorism, and maritime security. The Prime Minister highlighted the potential for co-production and co-development in defence manufacturing, emphasizing the benefits for both countries.

The visit also underscored the deep cultural and people-to-people ties between India and Greece, with PM Modi noting their shared history of over two and a half thousand years. The leaders discussed new initiatives to modernize and strengthen these relations, including the proposed Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement.

This bilateral visit marks a significant step in enhancing the strategic partnership between India and Greece. It is the first visit from Greece to India at the Head of State or Government level in 15 years, with the last Prime Ministerial visit occurring in 2008. The agreements and discussions during this visit are seen as pivotal in furthering cooperation and friendship between the two nations.
