President Joe Biden addressed the nation in a prime-time speech fresh from his recent visit to Israel, where he called for substantial aid to be provided to both Israel and Ukraine. Simultaneously, he strongly condemned the increasing incidents of anti-Semitism and Islamophobia in the United States.
Speaking from the Oval Office at 8 p.m. local time, Biden stressed the importance of supporting Israel in its response to Hamas terrorist attacks and continuing to aid Ukraine as it defends itself against Russian aggression. He announced his intention to submit an urgent budget request to Congress, emphasizing that these investments in the national security of America and support for key partners, such as Israel and Ukraine, would yield long-term dividends.
Biden made a clear statement against anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, stating that “we must, without equivocation, denounce anti-Semitism” and similarly denounced Islamophobia. He reassured those who have been affected by these forms of discrimination that they are a part of the American community.
The President underscored the link between the conflicts in Israel and Ukraine and American national security. He explained that supporting these two nations is an investment in American security, which will help protect American troops and contribute to a safer, more peaceful, and prosperous world for future generations.
Biden drew a parallel between the goals of Hamas and Russian President Vladimir Putin, highlighting their shared aim of undermining neighboring democracies. He argued that history has shown that failing to hold terrorists and dictators accountable for their actions leads to more chaos, debt, and destruction, with rising threats to the United States and the world.
Biden’s national address followed his visit to Tel Aviv, where he affirmed unwavering support for Israel and successfully negotiated humanitarian aid for Gaza with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his cabinet. As his administration prepares to send a substantial foreign aid package to Congress, it faces a divided and currently leaderless House of Representatives, with Republicans yet to reach a consensus on a new Speaker. This political deadlock has left the chamber in a state of disarray.
