President Murmu Announces Approval Of OCI Card For 7th Generation Of Indian-Origin Mauritians By India

In a historic decision, India has sanctioned a unique provision to bestow Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards upon the 7th generation of individuals of Indian origin in Mauritius, announced President Droupadi Murmu on Monday. This groundbreaking move will enable younger Mauritians of Indian descent to become overseas citizens of India, fostering a reconnection with the land of their forefathers.

President Murmu conveyed this significant development during the National Day celebrations of Mauritius in its capital, Port Louis. She also emphasized India’s commitment to supporting Mauritius through various development projects, citing the metro project, the new EMT hospital, the Supreme Court building, a solar power plant, and other initiatives as symbols of this collaborative effort.

Highlighting the enduring relationship between the two countries, President Murmu mentioned joint endeavors such as securing the Indian Ocean, sharing COVID vaccines during the pandemic, strengthening capacities across sectors, enhancing economic and people-to-people connections, and mutual support on global platforms.

The President expressed gratitude for India-assisted development projects that contribute to the well-being of Mauritians. She cited the recent launches by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Mauritius, including the introduction of UPI and RuPay card settlement systems, inauguration of a new airstrip and jetty, and the announcement of a program supplying affordable high genetic medicines to Mauritius.

During her three-day state visit, President Droupadi Murmu engaged in a “tete-a-tete” meeting with Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jagnauth, discussing ways to further strengthen bilateral relations between India and Mauritius. As a special gesture, President Murmu presented a RuPay card to Prime Minister Jugnauth. Notably, RuPay card services were inaugurated in Mauritius on February 12 this year.

President Droupadi Murmu’s visit commenced with a warm welcome from Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth at the airport, complete with full honors, marking the beginning of a significant diplomatic engagement.
