Protest breaks out in Serbia over mass shootings

Major protests broke out in Serbia’s Belgrade after the second gun violence incident killed eight and injured 14 within the span of one month. A total of 18 people were killed and 21 were injured in May in two shootings in two different parts of Serbia.

Following the incident, thousands of people took to the streets in an anti-government protest. It marked the third major protest in Siberia in recent weeks against the growing gun violence.

The protesters blamed the deaths on the culture of violence and also demanded the resignation of the top leaders including President Aleksandar Vucic of the Serbian Progressive Party, Interior Minister Bratislav Gasic, and the head of Serbia’s security agency.

Opposition parties also blamed the government led by President Aleksandar Vucic’s Serbian Progressive Party.

Meanwhile, Vucic termed the protests as a ‘political’ stunt. He has also vowed to disarm Serbia and crack down on legal and illicit firearms.
