Russia reported that a drone attack originating from Ukraine struck the Moscow-controlled Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, on Sunday,, while the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) called for caution.
The Zaporizhzhia facility, the largest in Europe, has been under Russian occupation since the beginning of the 2022 Ukraine offensive. According to reports, there was no release of radioactive material resulting from the attack. The IAEA stated that it was informed by the management installed by Russia that a drone had exploded on the site that day.
“The Ukrainian Armed Forces attacked the dome of the sixth power unit of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant,” the Moscow-controlled management of the plant said on social media.
“I urge to refrain from actions that contradict the five IAEA principles and jeopardise nuclear safety,” the UN agency’s director Rafael Grossi said.
ROSATOM, Russia’s nuclear agency, called on the West and Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to “categorically condemn the attempt to escalate the situation around the biggest nuclear power plant in Europe.”
According to ROSATOM, the drone struck the canteen of the plant, injuring three staff members, one of whom is in critical condition.
“Luckily, there is no critical damage or casualties and the radiation level at the station and territory around it has not changed,” the agency said.
