According to the Dagestan Emergency Ministry and Russian news agency TASS, an explosion at a gas station in Makhachkala, Russia, on Monday night resulted in 27 deaths and 102 injured. This information was reported on August 15, 2023, in Moscow (Russia). Makhachkala’s gas station was directly across from the explosion.
Monday night, the fire broke out at an auto repair shop by a highway in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, and moved to a neighbouring gas station, officials said, causing explosions along the way. A one-story structure was shown on video that was put online to be on fire, Reuters TV reported.
A witness was quoted as saying, “It’s like a war here,” by Reuters TV.
As stated by Vladimir Fisenko, the deputy health minister of Russia, who was providing an update on the casualties, at least 66 individuals were hurt, with 10 of them being in a severe condition.
In accordance to the Dagestani health ministry and information from Interfax, 13 of the injured were minors.
As per a statement from the Russian emergency service, it took firefighters more than three and a half hours to put out the fire, which had grown to cover an area of 600 square meters (715 square yards).
According to news sources, two out of every eight fuel tanks blew up. The effort to put out the fire involved more than 70 workers and 20 pieces of apparatus.
People were being evacuated from the area by police and local officials due to the possibility of a second explosion.
An inspection has reportedly been done in relation to the filling station fire, according to the regional prosecutor’s office, TASS said. Viktor Fisenko, the first deputy head of the Russian health ministry, arrived in Dagestan as senior Dagestani officials gathered at the scene of the tragedy.
