“Russia Positively Impacts Our Interests,” Says External Affair Minister S Jaishankar

In a recent interview with the German daily Handelsblatt, India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, emphasized the enduring and beneficial relationship between India and Russia, asserting that Moscow has consistently acted in India’s favor. This statement comes at a time when the West is intensifying efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.

Reflecting on the historical ties between the two nations, Jaishankar remarked, “Everyone conducts a relationship based on past experiences. If I look at the history of post-independence India, Russia has never hurt our interests. We have always had a stable and very friendly relationship… and our relationship with Moscow today is based on this experience.”

Jaishankar also addressed concerns regarding India’s energy dealings with Russia, particularly in light of global pressures to decrease reliance on Russian oil. He emphasized the pragmatic aspect of such transactions, highlighting that they contribute to stabilizing energy prices globally.

Addressing criticisms of India’s energy purchases from Russia compared to Europe’s, Jaishankar clarified the context, stating that India’s volumes are significantly lower. He underscored India’s commitment to securing the best energy deals for its citizens while navigating the complexities of global energy markets.

Regarding geopolitical dynamics, Jaishankar emphasized the need for mutual understanding and respect among nations, acknowledging differences in perspectives. He pointed out that just as India might not fully grasp Europe’s relationship with China, Europe should also recognize India’s unique ties with Russia.

The minister also discussed India’s stance on China, advocating for a pragmatic and confident approach in international relations. He stressed India’s willingness to engage with China while remaining assertive in safeguarding its interests.

During a security conference in Munich, Jaishankar had a brief interaction with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, highlighting India’s commitment to constructive engagement with neighboring countries.

In conclusion, Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s commitment to maintaining strong ties with Russia while navigating the complexities of global politics with confidence and pragmatism.
