Russian Airstrikes Claim Eight Lives In Kharkiv, Ukraine

According to Al Jazeera, at least eight individuals lost their lives and 10 sustained injuries in Russian airstrikes targeting Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, on Saturday, as reported by regional officials. While local authorities claimed Russian forces deployed bombs and missiles, the Ukrainian national police asserted that the attack was conducted using drones.

Images depicting flames engulfing city streets and buildings were released by police and local authorities. Governor Oleh Syniehubov of the Kharkiv region stated that six individuals were killed in overnight missile strikes on the city, with the death toll rising to eight subsequently. Mayor Igor Terekhov of Kharkiv confirmed the figure and reported ten additional injuries.

“The attack hit residential areas – at least nine high-rise buildings, three dormitories, a number of administrative buildings, a shop, a petrol station, a service station and cars were damaged,” Terekhov said, according to Al Jazeera.

According to the Ukrainian military’s Facebook post, in response to the attack, three out of the six Russian missiles and 28 out of the 32 drones were intercepted by its air defenses. Al Jazeera reported that following the midnight strikes, air raid alerts were issued for Kharkiv and most parts of the country, including Kyiv, the capital, for several hours.

Kharkiv, the capital of the eponymous city, is situated just 30 kilometers from the Russian border and has faced frequent bombing since Moscow commenced its invasion in February 2022. In recent weeks, the intensity of the attacks has escalated. A drone strike on the city last Wednesday resulted in four fatalities and extensive damage to apartment buildings.
