Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov to Attend BRICS Meeting at UNGA, will Discuss Future BRICS Chairmanship

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has confirmed his participation in the BRICS Foreign Ministers meeting, set to take place during the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 20 in New York, USA.

Lavrov shared this information on his official social media account, stating that the meeting will address pressing global issues, aligning with the UNGA’s agenda. He also mentioned that he will discuss collaboration within the BRICS framework and share Russia’s plans for its upcoming BRICS Chairmanship in 2024 with his counterparts.

The 78th UNGA session includes the High-Level General Debate from September 19 to September 23, marking a significant juncture in the pursuit of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The leaders will evaluate the progress of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 SDGs, offering high-level guidance on transformative actions. This event will result in a negotiated political declaration, as stated by the United Nations Women.

Previously, during the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, Sergey Lavrov and India’s External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar engaged in discussions covering various bilateral and global matters. These discussions encompassed interactions within the UN, G20, and BRICS, as well as strategies to enhance trade, economic cooperation, logistics, and financial interactions, as per the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Furthermore, President Putin announced Russia’s chairmanship of BRICS for the upcoming year, with a focus on strengthening multilateralism for global development and security. Russia’s chairmanship plans include organizing approximately 200 political, economic, and public events, with a BRICS summit scheduled for October 2024 in Kazan.
