According to Russia’s federal penitentiary service, opposition leader Alexei Navalny passed away on Friday at the Arctic prison colony where he was serving a 19-year sentence. Following a stroll, Navalny passed out and the prison service reported that he was unable to be resuscitated by medical professionals. After going for a walk, Navalny felt unwell and nearly passed out. An ambulance team was called and medical personnel showed up right away,” the statement stated.
“Resuscitation measures were carried out which did not yield positive results. Paramedics confirmed the death of the convict. The causes of death are being established.”
The Investigative Committee of Russia declared that it had begun looking into his passing. Kira Yarmysh, Navalny’s press secretary, stated that his staff was unaware of his passing. In a social media post, she stated, “Alexei’s lawyer is now flying to Kharp,” the location of his prison colony. Russian news agencies said that President Vladimir Putin was aware of Navalny’s passing, citing his spokesman.
The most well-known opposition figure in Russia, 47-year-old Sergei Navalny, gained a sizable following by denouncing corruption in Vladimir Putin’s Russia. Despite Russia’s strict anti-protest laws, his exposes on his YouTube channel received millions of views and inspired tens of thousands of Russians to take to the streets. After returning to Russia from Germany, where he was recovering from a nearly fatal nerve agent poisoning attack using Novichok, a weapon from the Soviet era, he was imprisoned at the beginning of 2021.
In a series of cases, he received sentences totaling 19 years in prison on grounds that were strongly criticized by Western and independent human rights organizations as reprisals for his defiance of the Kremlin. He was transferred to a remote Arctic prison colony in northern Siberia’s Yamalo-Nenets region of Russia towards the end of the previous year. You can only listen to the newest music on JioSaavn.com. Valentine’s Day saw the last post on Navalny’s Telegram channel, which he ran in exile with the help of his team and attorneys, paying homage to his late wife Yulia Navalnaya.
