Russia’s Stable Relationship with India, Fractured Bonds with the West: EAM Jaishankar

Speaking at Hudson University, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar described India-Russia relations as remarkably stable and exceptional, distinguishing them from Moscow’s often turbulent ties with other nations. While acknowledging that India-Russia relations might not be characterized as spectacular, the EAM emphasized their consistent and stable nature over the decades, a sharp contrast to Russia’s interactions with China, the United States, and Europe, which have experienced significant fluctuations.

EAM Jaishankar highlighted that India-Russia relations have remained resilient and devoid of the sharp ups and downs that have characterized many other global relationships. He noted that this stability itself is a significant testament to the strength of the partnership.

Addressing the changing dynamics in Russia’s foreign policy, EAM pointed out that recent events in Ukraine have strained Russia’s relations with the West. As a result, he predicted that Russia would increasingly focus on non-Western regions, particularly Asia, due to its economic dynamism. India, with its growing economic importance and expanding trade partnerships, is expected to play a significant role in Russia’s strategic calculations.

EAM Jaishankar also emphasized India’s growing influence in the global economy, particularly in the Middle East. He highlighted India’s burgeoning trade ties with Gulf nations, including the UAE and Saudi Arabia. During his visit to the 78th United Nations General Assembly session, he met with his UAE counterpart and discussed the rapid progress in bilateral cooperation and mutual engagement on regional and global issues.

The External Affairs Minister drew attention to the Gulf region’s dependence on daily food consumption from India, which was particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic. He underscored the deepening economic integration between India and Gulf economies, emphasizing their intertwined interests.

In collaboration with Saudi Arabia, the United States, and the European Union, India and the UAE have unveiled an ambitious initiative known as the ‘India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor.’ This project, introduced at the G20 summit in New Delhi, aims to revamp trade routes between the Gulf, Europe, and South Asia, enhancing connectivity through rail and sea links.

EAM Jaishankar’s visit to the United States includes engagements in New York and Washington, D.C., where he is expected to address various forums, including the 4th World Culture Festival organized by the Art of Living Foundation.
