Khalid bin Mohsen Shaari, formerly recognized as the heaviest man alive, has lost 542 kg, thanks to the intervention of Saudi Arabia’s former King Abdullah. In 2013, Khalid weighed an alarming 610 kg and was bedridden for over three years, relying on friends and family for even the most basic needs. Moved by Khalid’s situation, King Abdullah took action with a comprehensive plan to save his life.
The King arranged for Khalid to receive top-quality medical care at no expense. He was transported from his home in Jazan to King Fahad Medical City in Riyadh using a forklift and a specially designed bed. A team of 30 medical professionals was assembled to create a rigorous treatment and diet plan.
Khalid’s treatment involved gastric bypass surgery, a tailored diet and exercise regimen, and intensive physiotherapy to help him regain mobility. With the support of top Middle Eastern scientists, Khalid experienced remarkable results.
Formerly the heaviest person alive and the second heaviest person in history, Khalid bin Mohsen Shaari underwent a stunning transformation, shedding nearly half of his body weight within just six months.
By 2023, Khalid had lost an impressive 542 kg, reducing his weight to a healthy 63.5 kg. The dramatic physical change required multiple surgeries to remove excess skin—a typical issue for those who experience substantial weight loss, as the skin often struggles to adjust to the new body shape.
Today, he is affectionately called “The Smiling Man,” a nickname given by the medical staff who witnessed his extraordinary transformation.
